Gornergrat - The Matterhorn Railway

With my brother snowboarding down the slopes of the Swiss Alps, I took the underground, incline train from Sunnegga ZBAG-zsb to Zermatt ZBAG-zsb to meet up with our mother at our hotel (National Hotel) and explore more of Zermatt. Momma and I decided to take the a cog train to the top viewing point for the Matterhorn - The Gornergrat, the Matterhorn Railway. First, we had to find the train station. This proved difficult for us. I blame it on thin air. Momma and I walked down many streets (and took many street photos) until we eventually figured out where the Gornergrat train station was (it was pretty much directly behind our hotel, maybe a block or two).

Finally, we found the Gornergrat train station. It is directly across the street from the train station we arrived on just the previous night. The ride to the top of the mountain is beautiful. You will love it. Snow covered almost everything, and we had expansive views across valleys to mountain range peaks in every direction. This train ride offers a million+ photo opportunities of the Matterhorn, selfies and all. You will be impressed! The next few photos are just a quick glimpse into the sights along the way.

There are a couple of stops along the way but we went all the way to the last stop - the Gornergrat kulm (summit). The train station at the top has a souvenir shop and then there is a short walk uphill to elevators and steps that lead to a larger visitors center with a restaurant, museum and more stores. Momma and I took a couple of photo ops outside with the Matterhorn in the background.

This is looking down to the train station. Momma and I took this same train back to our starting point in Zermatt.

I think Troy took this photo selfie while he was snowboarding.

Momma and I stayed at the top for just a short while. Troy was still snowboarding as far as we knew. He did make a trip to this same point at Gornergrat but we must have missed each other in transit. When Momma and I were leaving, we waited in the train station for the next train. While in the station, I found a set of stamps that were available to stamp your passport pages showing that I had been to Gornergrat. I love that it shows the elevation - 10,132 feet - and has the picture of the Matterhorn. Troy, much to his dismay, did not find this stamp on his trip to Gornergrat. He will have to make another trip. The stamps are in the hallway of the train station and are free for anyone to use. Take your passport and stamp it. Make sure you hold the stamp correct so that the mountain peak points somewhere toward the top of the page.

After our full day on the slopes of the Swiss Alps, Momma and I made our way back to Zermatt by train enjoying the beautiful mountain views along the way. We met Troy at our hotel. Rested a bit and got ready for New Year's Eve.
